Scarborough local arts Theatre

Stephen Joseph Theatre

The Stephen Joseph Theatre is an independent theatre and cinema based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

Our home is a beautifully-restored 1930s Odeon cinema, home to our famous theatre-in-the-round which was the first of its kind in the world.

The Round provides a truly unique experience as the audience is seated all around the stage. Not only does the audience see the performance from every angle, it also brings the actor into the same space as the audience.

Scarborough Open air Theatre

Scarborough Open Air Theatre

Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre was built by Scarborough Corporation in the 1930’s. The Lord Mayor of London opened the Open Air Theatre in Northstead Manor Gardens in 1932, and audiences flocked to see ‘Merrie England’, the first production to be staged at the outdoor venue.

The theatre underwent a major refurbishment and on 20 May 2010, the newly refurbished Scarborough Open Air Theatre was officially opened by The Queen of the United Kingdom accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Scarborough Castle

Scarborough Castle crowns a spectacular headland between the two bays of the famous seaside resort.

Visit, and you can explore lofty viewing platforms within the Inner Bailey and the Great Tower offering great views over the town, the harbour, and the bay. Leave plenty of time to explore the vast grassy headland – it’s a gigantic wildflower meadow, bigger than 12 football pitches.

On the cliff edge you’ll find the remains of a Roman signal station and an Anglo-Saxon church built on its site. Look out for a striking modern sculpture about climate change, part of the ‘Wild Eye’ art and nature project.

Scarborough Castle has been awarded a Silver Green Impact Award,
